Traditional Swedish handicraft
The traditional Swedish handicraft of carving a Dala horse from pine wood is a popular souvenir. These carvings are handmade, and unlike other crafts, the horse's shape and size will differ slightly from one another. According to some aficionados, only Dala Horses made in Nusnas are authentic. Anders Henriksson, a Nusnas-based Dala Horse seller, began selling them in 1926. Jannes Olsson and Nils Olsson, his two sons, were schoolmates who began to help their big brother. They eventually took up this tradition seriously and opened a small workshop.
The Biblical Jonah story, which tells of a man who rode a horse on the desert floor, inspired the original design for the Dala Horse. The wooden horse was carved in rich colors and decorated with floral designs. The wooden horse was a popular toy in the 19th century. Dala Horses were made using wood scraps and paint-pigment from copper mines nearby. Woodsmen and soldiers may have different traditions in carving Dala horses. In the 1870s they were painted with vibrantly colored designs and wore saddles with floral patterns.
Origin
Dala horses painting is an ancient art that is considered a Swedish traditional. This style can be traced back to the Swedish furniture paintings. This intricate ornamental style was commonly used on furniture between the seventeenth to eighteenth century. These paintings were often created by itinerant painters hailing from the Dalarna region in Sweden. Since then, Dala horse painting has been a popular art form.

There are many stories about this tradition. Some believe it is a legacy of the 15th-century, when foresters from central Sweden carved toy horses over fire. Swedish furniture makers have been using slow-growth pine from Dalarna forests since long. Some even used leftover wood scraps. Although there is no evidence to support this, the Dala horse tradition lives on. This horse is now a national symbol in Sweden.
Size
A Dalah horse is a traditional, distinctive toy. A Dala horse's size and shape can vary and there are many varieties. You can find them in all sizes: stocky, small and medium. These magnificent creatures were born in Sweden's Mora Village of Dalarna. They are now very popular all over the world. They were originally carved in the spare time of Swedish woodcutters who had no other responsibilities. A Dala horse is one of the most durable and long-lasting wooden toys that has survived the test of time.
Dala horses were popular in Sweden but they didn't become well-known outside of Sweden until 1939. A 2.5-meter Dala Horse was displayed outside the Swedish Pavilion at the World Exhibition in New York. The Dala Horse gained so much attention that 20,000 more were shipped to America in 1940. Today, Dala Horses are primarily orange and red in color, but they can be painted any color, or left plain. The Avesta Municipality of Sweden has one of the biggest Dala Horses.

The earliest mentions of Dala horses go back to 1623. However, Stika Erik Hansson, a native from Sweden, introduced the two-colour technique which is still in use today. Hansson lived in Risa (a town in Mora Parish) and was buried in Bega Cemetery. Stanton County is Nebraska. In later years, Erik Erikson became Hansson and moved to America.

FAQ
How long does a piece take to finish?
It depends on the type of wood you choose, the complexity of the design, and the amount of finishing you apply. Hardwoods require more care than softwoods. Hardwoods are also more expensive than softwoods. However, they are stronger and more resistant to moisture. It takes between one and three months to finish a piece.
Do I have the potential to make a decent living doing this?
Yes! In fact, most woodworkers already have it. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS), in May 2012 the median annual wage of woodworkers was $34,000 That's higher than the national average of $31,000 per year.
What wooden items do you sell well?
The best-selling wooden items are those which have been made from wood that was harvested sustainably.
Oak, cherry and mahogany are the most sought-after wood types for furniture.
These woods not only have great strength, but also beautiful patterns and colors. They are also very durable if properly maintained.
To prevent moisture damage, wood furniture should always first be painted. This covers all surfaces, drawers included, as well as doors and handles.
Choose a paint with water resistance if you want furniture to last as long possible.
You should use a high-quality oil-based primer followed by two coats of top coat. Depending on the amount of wear, you may need several coats.
You should avoid using aerosol paints or spray cans. These products have solvents that evaporate quickly, leaving behind dangerous fumes.
What kind and type of wood should i use?
The most popular types of wood used in woodworking include oak, pine, birch, maple, cherry, mahogany, teak, poplar, redwood, and bamboo. Each wood type has its own characteristics which affect the final product's appearance and feel. Oak is a darker wood and tends to be more durable than other types. Birch is lightweight and soft while mahogany is heavier and denser. You can also choose from solid wood or veneers. Veneers are thin sheets or wood that are glued together into one layer.
Can I refinish furniture that I make?
Yes! You don't have to hire a professional to refinish furniture. There are many ways you can do it yourself. Here are some suggestions:
Use sandpaper on the surface to remove any stains or scratches. Next, wipe the surface clean with a damp cloth.
Apply clear polyurethane varnish. Allow to dry thoroughly before moving furniture.
Use acrylic paint to paint furniture.
Stain can be used instead of paint. The furniture will have a rich look thanks to the stain.
Shellac wax is applied. Wax will protect the wood and add shine.

How To
How to stain wood
Stain wood is a process that involves applying chemicals to the surface of wood, which changes its color. This chemical reaction causes wood to turn from whiteish to brownish. Although oak is the most popular type of wood to stain, there are many other types that can be used.
There are many ways to stain wood surfaces. Mixing the stain in a solvent such as turpentine and spraying it onto the wood is one method. You can also apply a solution containing water and dye directly to the wooden surface. The stain can be mixed with paints and varnishes to become part of the final coating.
Preparing the wood surface is the first step to staining it. Clean the wood to get rid of any grease, dirt or other substances that might be detrimental to the stain's application. Sanding can smoothen out scratches and uneven spots. The next step is to determine the type of stain you would like to use. Penetrating stains are different from non-penetrating. Penetrating and non-penetrating wood stains penetrate deeper than other types, making them perfect for dark colors like mahogany. Non-penetrating oils work best when used with light colors, like maple.
After deciding on the type of stain, you want to apply, prepare your tools. The best tool for applying stains is a paintbrush. It allows you to evenly distribute the liquid over the surface. You should also have some handy rags to wipe up excess stains after you finish painting. You should have enough containers to store the various components of the stain mixture if you intend to mix it yourself.
After you have prepared your materials, clean the area you intend to stain. You can remove grime and dirt with warm water and soap. Wipe the entire piece of furniture with a rag dampened with clean water. Be sure to get rid of all loose material, especially if staining is planned for darker wood.
Next, spray the stain. Start at one end of the piece of furniture and brush or spray the stain onto the wood. Slowly and carefully move along the grain of wood, slowly but steadily, until you reach the other end. Make sure that the stain does not drip off the edge of the wood. Allow the stain to dry completely before you move on to the next step.
Apply a clear polyurethane sealant to protect the painted surface. Three coats of polyurethane sealing agent are required. Let the third coat dry overnight before you sand the final coat.
