Cub Scouts: Easy Whittling Projects

workshop shop

Simple whittling tasks are simple and cost-effective for the Woodcarving merit award badge. Name tags and badges make great projects for whittling. Scouts can choose to whittle badges or nametags with wood burning. Plaques are a good example of larger pieces that can be used for whittling.

Superhero logos are straightforward

While there are many movies about superheroes, many logos you can carve are simple and easy. The bat is a great start, as is the diamond S on Superman's shield. Spiderman's web is a relatively straightforward design, while the Joker card is not too difficult to carve either. Once Cub Scouts have mastered the skill of cutting the logo, the finished product can be used to decorate mirrors or dressers.

Shazam! The background of the Shazam! logo is a cloudy, dark sky. To symbolize the comic tale, this logo uses lighting and text in three dimensions. While superheroes use logos to represent their stories, the whittling project for cub scouts can also be about brand names and businesses. Although superheroes are usually associated with comic books, logos for superheroes bridge the gap between business and whittling.

Morfmir's whittled chess set

Whittled chess sets make great projects for Cub Scouts Webelos Craftsman activity badge. This set is made of non-wood materials and comes with instructions and a list of parts. A hardware chess set is easy to make, and the kids can enjoy playing a game once the project is finished.

A boy scout from New Hampshire designed this unique chessset. Chandler Francis took a metalworking merit badge and made the board and pieces at the blacksmithing pavilion. Scouts can learn new technologies in the "Sinquefield Incinvention Lab," named for Dr. Jeanne Sinquefield. They also get hands-on education. This project required the use of a laser and a 3D printer.

Woodcarving merit badge

One of the most popular Cub Scout elective badges is Woodcarving, and you can earn it as a cub or an older boy. Woodcarving is a skill that requires knowledge and skills. Woodcarving can either be done by Scouts within their councils or in a special camp. The following are some tips for earning the badge:

This badge can only be completed with a good knife. You can use a small, well-sharpened folder or pocket knife to complete this badge. However, thumb guards made using duct tape may be an option. A leather work glove made with ducttape is another option. These gloves will protect your hands and allow you to use a sharp knife. These items must be safely stored throughout the project.

Woodcarving using a pocketknife

If you'd like to teach your Cub Scouts how to safely use a pocketknife, this activity is perfect for you. With the proper safety techniques and a sharp knife, they'll have a great time creating unique crafts. Woodcarving is also a great way to teach them the benefits of knife skills and a safe, light touch.

Another fun craft project is to carve an animal. Carving an animal is not easy. Cubs are able to carve their favorite animal or sport. It is a great way to introduce your Cubs and teach them about unknown creatures. While they are creating, you can also help them learn more about them. These are some fun woodcarving projects for Cub Scouts.

Soap is a great way to introduce Scouts and leaders to woodcarving. Soap is safe and easy to use, making it safer for them to carve. After they become comfortable with soap, they can start woodcarving. They can fashion spears and peel the bark off of sticks, and they can even build slingshots or tipis!

FAQ

What woods can be used to make furniture?

Woods are classified based on their hardness. Softwoods include cedar, pine, cedar, and Cypress. Because they are resistant, they can be used for outdoor furniture. Hardwoods include oak, maple, mahogany, and teak. They can't withstand the elements outside so they're best kept indoors.

What kind and type of wood should i use?

The most popular types of wood used in woodworking include oak, pine, birch, maple, cherry, mahogany, teak, poplar, redwood, and bamboo. Each wood type has its own characteristics which affect the final product's appearance and feel. Oak tends to be harder and darker than other woods. Birch, which is lighter and soft, is more heavy than mahogany. There are two options: solid wood and veneers. Veneers are thin wood sheets that are glued together to form one layer.

How do you know which tools are the best for you?

When shopping for tools, it helps to think about your needs and preferences. Do you prefer metal or plastic handles What size screws or nails do you prefer? Do you prefer hand tools over power tools?

Do you know anything more about woodworking?

It's easy to underestimate the amount of work involved in making furniture. The hardest part of the process is actually finding the right wood. There are so many wood options that it can be difficult to choose the right one.

A problem is that wood doesn't have the same properties. Some woods will crack or warp with time. Others will split or crack. You must take these things into consideration before purchasing wood.

Statistics

  • In 2014, there were just over 237,000 jobs for all woodworkers, with other wood product manufacturing employing 23 percent; wood kitchen cabinets and countertop manufacturing employing 21 percent. (theartcareerproject.com)
  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)
  • Woodworkers on the lower end of that spectrum, the bottom 10% to be exact, make roughly $24,000 a year, while the top 10% makes $108,000. (zippia.com)
  • Most woodworkers agree that lumber moisture needs to be under 10% for building furniture. (woodandshop.com)

How To

How to stain hardwood

Staining wood can be described as a process where chemicals are applied to the wood surface. This causes the wood to take on a new color. This chemical reaction changes the wood's color from white to brownish. Oak is the most common wood type for staining. However, you can also use other wood types.

There are many ways to stain wood surfaces. You can mix the stain with a solvent, such as turpentine, and spray it onto the wood. You can also apply a solution containing water and dye directly to the wooden surface. You can also mix stains with varnishes or paints so that they become part the finish coating.

Preparing your wood for staining is the first thing to do. You must clean the wood well to remove any grease or dirt that might interfere with the application of the stain. Sanding can smoothen out scratches and uneven spots. The next step is to determine the type of stain you would like to use. There are two main types of stain: non-penetrating and penetrating. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper into the wood than non-penetrating ones, making them ideal for dark colors such as mahogany. Non-penetrating oils work best when used with light colors, like maple.

You will need to decide on the type of stain you want to use, and then prepare your tools. Because you can spread the stain evenly with a paintbrush, it is ideal for applying them. It is a good idea to have rags on hand in case you need them to clean up any stains that may remain after you have finished painting. If you plan on mixing the stain yourself make sure that you have enough containers to hold the different components.

After you have prepared your materials, clean the area you intend to stain. Clean the area with soap and warm water to get rid of dirt and grime. Use a dampened sponge and warm water to clean the entire piece. Make sure you eliminate any loose debris, especially if you plan to stain darker wood.

Next, spray the stain. Apply the stain by brushing or spraying it onto one side of the furniture. Move slowly and carefully along the grain of your wood until you reach its opposite end. Keep the stain from dripping off the wood's surface. Before you proceed with the next steps, let the stain dry completely.

To protect the painted surface, apply a coat of clear polyurethane sealant. Apply three coats polyurethane sealer. Allow the third coat, which should dry overnight, to dry before sanding.
