Many artists are exploring the art of chainsaw wood carving. This art form is an extension of their skills and often uses a mix of traditional and modern carving techniques. Crager, along with Tracie Dugas his wife, have been carving beautiful wood creations together since the 1960s. In between shows, they try to get home as much as possible to help out with painting and staining. His daughters are now involved in his work as well, helping out on occasion with painting or staining. White pine is preferred by them as it is lighter and less susceptible to cracking.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson is an Oregon chainsaw wood carver. He is a Poughkeepsie resident and lives in Oregon with his wife and their son. Anderson has several degrees in fine arts. He teaches art to Pre-K through fifth graders. Anderson has carved sculptures all over Long Island. He also has sculptures from Colorado. His work includes sculptures of standing trees and smaller pieces such as corn ears. He is currently working on a sign for Youngs Farm in Riverhead.

He can create stunning sculptures with a $400 chainsaw that is much faster than it would take to cut a tree. Because they can be recycled, chainsaw wood carving is a more eco-friendly option than chisels or hammers. Anderson promotes his business by word of mouth. He has created a huge cobra and great blue heron to help a Wading River mechanic.

Tracie Dugas

Tracie Dugas created this life-sized wizard from wood. It is a stunning example of her skills as a chainsaw wood carver. The 49-yearold lives in Clare Nova Scotia between Digby, Yarmouth. The chainsaw wood carver was just one of many artists who displayed their work at the Canada Day weekend in Sydney. While Sydney's waterfront was full of tourists, the brief dry spell gave locals the perfect opportunity to enjoy the waterfront and get a glimpse from the chainsaw wood carver.

Tim Crager

Although Tim Crager wasn't an artist, and was only slightly skilled with a chainsaw at the time, his passion for carving became a full-time job six years ago. Crager has sold more than $1,000,000 worth of carvings across the Eastern U.S. since then. Born in Garrett, Eastern Kentucky, Crager grew up watching a chainsaw wood carver at work. Crager was attracted to the art's unique style and he gave his boss his two-week notice.

Crager favors white pine over other wood types because it is easily accessible from tree trimming companies. But, there are many wood types that people prefer. Crager is a follower of the grain and allows the saw to guide his creations. Crager knows what he wants to create before he even begins a project. But he may change his mind halfway through. A small project can be done in an hour, while a large one may take 33 to 35 hours.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins works as a chainsaw-woodcarver. His wood carvings are detailed and often contain many animals. His creations have attracted the attention of both tourists and neighbours. Blue Arrow Farm's entry and coffee shop is adorned by chainsaw sculptures so detailed and large that they can be seen from all angles. Blue Arrow Farm is owned and managed by Don Oriolo. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo’s wife, met while they were competing in a New Jersey State Fair-sponsored chainsaw contest.

The 15-year-old wood carver and winner of the award was inspired to start carving at a Reedsport competition. He had carved before, but hadn't used a chainsaw. His carvings now feature an otter, mother bear and squirrel looking out of a tree. And now he's preparing to compete in the National Chainsaw Carving Competition.

FAQ

What is the difference between a hobbyist woodworker and a professional woodworker.

Hobbyists like making things with wood. Professionals focus more on quality. Hobbyists often take pride in the creations they make and often share them to family and friends. Professionals spend hours researching design ideas before starting to work on a project. They will meticulously plan every detail of their work from choosing the right materials to finishing it.

Is there anything else I should know about woodworking?

Furniture making is a laborious task. It's easy not to appreciate how hard it is. The hardest part of the process is actually finding the right wood. It can be hard to choose from the many types of wood that are available.

A problem is that wood doesn't have the same properties. Some woods will warp and others will split or crack. These things should be considered before you buy wood.

What's the time taken to finish a piece furniture?

It depends on the size of the piece of furniture. You can finish smaller projects, such as boxes or picture frames, in one day. Larger projects, like desks or dining tables require several days. It takes time and effort to properly stain the wood.

How To

How to stain hardwood

The process of staining wood involves the application of chemicals to the wood's surface, which causes it to change its color. This chemical reaction causes the wood to change from white to brownish red. Although oak is the most popular type of wood to stain, there are many other types that can be used.

There are several ways to apply stains to wood surfaces. One method involves mixing the stain and a solvent and then spraying it on the wood. Some methods involve a mixture of water and dye that is applied directly to the wood. The stain can be mixed with paints and varnishes to become part of the final coating.

Preparing your wood for staining is the first thing to do. The wood must be thoroughly cleaned to remove all grease and dirt. Sanding smoothens any scratches or rough spots. Next, you need to decide which stain you want. Penetrating stains are different from non-penetrating. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper than non-penetrating stains, which makes them great for dark colors like mahogany. Light colors such as maple work well with non-penetrating stain.

After choosing the type and application method you prefer, gather your tools. Because you can spread the stain evenly with a paintbrush, it is ideal for applying them. It is a good idea to have rags on hand in case you need them to clean up any stains that may remain after you have finished painting. If you are planning to mix your stain, ensure you have enough containers for each component.

Once you have prepared your materials, start by cleaning the area where you plan to stain the wood. Use soap and warm water to remove dust and grime. Wipe down all furniture pieces with a dampened cloth and clean water. You should remove any debris, especially if your plan is to stain darker wood.

Next, spray the stain. Begin at one end and spray or brush the stain on the wood. Move slowly and carefully along the grain of your wood until you reach its opposite end. Be careful not to let the stain drip off the wood's edge. Allow the stain to dry completely before you move on to the next step.

Clear polyurethane is used to protect the painted surfaces. Apply three coats polyurethane sealer. Allow the third coat to dry overnight, before sanding.
